Department of Crop Sciences

Landscape Stewardship

Since its inception, the University of Illinois has a long tradition of conducting research on horticultural crops that enhance the human condition.  However, as the human population continues to grow, not only is the world is becoming more and more urbanized, society is increasingly influencing large portions of the planet.  Research focused on improving the connection between society, agriculture, and the environment is a major pursuit of several faculty members, graduate students, and research professionals in the Department of Crop Sciences.

Multiple approaches integrating methodologies and tools from various fields such as ecology, landscape architecture, and social science are employed to conduct cutting-edge research to improve the prospects of sustainable landscaping with both ornamental and food crops.
